Minister Jeremiah updates parliament on bilateral meetings during China state visit

Minister Jesse Jeremiah gave a summary report to parliament in April on his key bilateral meetings during the President's state visit to China which included signing cooperation agreements and in-depth discussions on the exploration of deep sea minerals.

Minister Jeremiah was one of two cabinet ministers who accompanied President David Adeang on the state visit and co-signed on behalf of Nauru the Agriculture Cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China and the Department of Environmental Management and Agriculture (DEMA) Nauru; and the Exchange of Letters on Chinese Experts team to facilitate bilateral pragmatic cooperation between China and Nauru.

The former MOU focuses on strengthening areas of cooperation including poultry and livestock farming, vegetable and fruit farming, and human resource development; and the latter confirms the request by Nauru to send an expert team to Nauru to carry out technical assistance and research and on-site inspections for specific projects in the fields of culture and education, agriculture and poverty alleviations, health, and infrastructure.

During the state visit Minister Jeremiah, Deputy Minister Maverick Eoe, Nauru Ocean Resources (NORI) chairman Gerard Barron and director of business development William Li, engaged in meetings with key stakeholders concerning Nauru's interests in the extraction of deep sea minerals.

The group also met with China's Deputy Commissioner of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) to seek support and discuss potential collaborative efforts.

In their meeting with the foreign ministry's Director General of the Department of Treaty and Law, discussions focused on avenues to advance deep sea mineral development, and emphasised the importance of China's continued support within the framework of the International Seabed Authority (ISA).

The minister also met with China's minister for ecology and environment and discussed environmental advancements particularly the utilisation of polymetallic nodules and how the process can significantly reduce power consumption, thus aligning with environmental sustainability goals.
