Nauru hosts 2nd Micronesian
Ministers for Women Conference
The 2nd Micronesian Ministers for
Women Conference (MMWC) was hosted in the Republic of Nauru under
the theme 'Eõ Ngage - Eõ Yaran - Añ Towepo' and convened over three
days, 16-18 April.
Chaired by Minister for Women and
Social Development Affairs (WASDA) Charmaine Scotty, the conference
featured presentations from regional organisations and delegations
across Micronesia on issues impacting women's lives, fostering
dialogue with the Nauruan government and stakeholders.
His Excellency President David
Adeang along with Marshall Islands' Senator Daisy Momotaro, Guam's
Former Senator Carlotta Guerrero, and SPC Principal Strategic
Pacific Women Lead Mereseini Rakuita were the guests of honour.
Aiming to foster collaboration and
discussions, attendees included Nauru government officials
alongside their regional counterparts, where they had the
opportunity to share best practices, discuss challenges, and
develop strategies for advancing gender equality.
Minister Scotty outlined the
region's top priorities for gender equality and women empowerment
in her keynote address which includes ending violence against
women, women's economic empowerment, health, education, gender and
culture, and people with disabilities.
"It is critical that we are clear
on our areas of greatest need, to guide our work within ministries
for women - and mainstreamed across all government ministries,"
Minister Scotty said.
With the support of the Pacific
Islands Forum and the Pacific Community, the MMWC's outcomes
document, Añ Towepo Declaration, was drafted, finalised and
endorsed by the participants, and signed by the heads of
delegations.
Secretary for WASDA Joy Heine said
the outcomes document, "will help guide us forward" and that "it
also ensures we are prepared for the Triennial Conference of
Pacific Women, with agreed and documented gender equality
priorities".
The 3rd Micronesian Ministers for
Women Conference will be hosted by the Federated States of
Micronesia in 2027.
