President updates audit activities
President Adeang presented a
statement on the activities of the Department of Audit for the last
three quarters.
The revised Strategic and
Operational Plan for 2023-24 was formulated by the department with
the assistance of the Pacific Association of Supreme Audit
Institutions (PASAI), to achieve 21 goals within the five-year
period.
The department is currently working
towards achieving the maximum possible goals in the timeframe.
In November 2022, the department
prepared an independence strategy to protect the department against
any form of influence or political pressure to do their job.
President Adeang said it is
prepared in line with the Lima Declaration and Principle 10 of the
Mexico Declaration 2007 on SAI independence.
As such the representative of PASAI
and the auditor general had meetings with the PAC chairman, DFAT
Australia, secretary for finance, NGO representatives, media
representatives, and the chief secretary, seeking support to gain
full independence for the audit institution.
In September 2023, and with the
assistance of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) the
department installed the UNDP-developed audit recommendation
tracking tool which enhances the department's current manual
tracking methods, significantly improving its ability to identify
recurring recommendations.
Additionally, it enables the department to integrate pertinent
data into citizen audit guides, thereby promoting transparency and
accountability.
President Adeang said over the last
three quarters the department successfully conducted and completed
seven financial audits and two compliance audits.
The financial audits include for
Nauru Postal Services Corporation; Cenpac Corporation; Nauru
Tourism Corporation; Nauru Government annual financials for
2019-20; Nauru Consulate Brisbane; and Nauru High Commission office
Suva, Fiji.
