Urban development planning currently underway

The Nauru Sustainable and Resilient Urban Development Project (NSRUDP) led by the Department of Climate Change and National Resilience (CCNR) continue its plan to improve the water supply, sanitation, and solid waste management services for Nauru.

The proposed NSRUDP includes a piped water supply for 1,215 households and businesses in the high-density areas from the districts of Yaren to Baitsi; a new sanitation treatment facility at the dump site for the treatment of waste from septic tanks and cesspits; a new septic truck; a new composting facility at the dump site for processing green waste and other organic waste; a rubbish recycling centre for repurposing cans, cardboard and other waste; and an improved waste collection and drop off system for recycling.

Minister for NRC Reagan Aliklik told parliament in April that the preparation work at the dumpsite is currently underway and NRC seeks the public's cooperation during this preparation by complying with the dumpsite operators especially when traveling up to the dump site area for health and safety reasons.

Earlier in March, consultants from the Beca International Group Ltd were on island to conduct consultations and site investigations which are essential for the design of the water supply, sanitation and recycling facilities.

"On behalf of the Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation, I want to thank ADB and Beca for rendering their much-needed assistance and expertise in drafting the updated solid waste management strategy," Minister Aliklik said.

The project funding is proposed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB); meanwhile the ADB fact-finding team led by Maria Tran and Kyaw Thu concluded their mission in April consulting with the NSRUDP steering committee and gathering final information required for the proposal.
