Quarantine and DEMA engage in biosecurity training

Nauru Quarantine and the Department of Environmental Management and Agriculture (DEMA) recently completed an intensive two-week biosecurity training program from 6 to 16 May.

The program is funded by the European Union and organised by the Pacific Community's (SPC) Agricultural trade Facilitation through Economic integration in the Pacific (SAFE) Project.

SPC's Biosecurity, Sanitary and Phytosanitary officer Mr Riten Gosai facilitated the training and says the project is implemented across 15 Pacific countries.

The program aims to build the capacity of relevant officers in Nauru and hone their skills in risk assessment and mitigation; plant pest surveillance; emergency response planning; and sharing effective biosecurity measures that are crucial to maintain a safe environment for Nauru free from harmful and invasive pests and diseases.

Director of Quarantine Amy Tsitsi acknowledges SPC for providing the training describing it as "insightful, engaging and practical, [and has] equipped officers with the knowledge required to effectively implement biosecurity measures in our respective roles".

"This project is relevant and important for the Nauru quarantine division because it enhances our ability to prevent, detect, and respond to invasive animal and plant pests and other potential threats to public health and the environment," Ms Tsitsi said.
