Students get familiar with biological diversity
In celebration of International Day
for Biological Diversity, the Nauru Restoration Generation project
(NRG) hosted an educational excursion for students at the Menen
farm, 22 May.
Around 50 Nauru Secondary School
students attended the event which is aimed to promote environmental
awareness, safeguarding and conserving biodiversity and teaching
sustainable agricultural practises to the students.
In collaboration with the NRG, the
Department of Environmental Management (DEMA) and the Department of
Climate Change and National Resilience (DCCNR), students were able
to ask questions and learn more broadly about how human activity
and climate change impacts biodiversity.
NRG's Project Manager Ceetra Itaia
says educating the students about their environment is essential
and that the event provided a valuable opportunity to have the
students engage with biodiversity through a hands-on approach.
She further said that by having
first-hand experience with agricultural practices and learning
about the delicate balance of ecosystems, they are empowered to
become responsible caretakers of the environment.
International Day for Biological
Diversity was adopted by the United Nations (UN) in December
2000.
It falls within the scope of Nauru
National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) and the UN's
Post-2015 Development Agenda's Sustainable Development Goals.
NRG plans to host similar
initiatives aimed at young people again in the near future.
